Q: Can I drive a 10 yr old Volvo S70 into the deep hills of West Virginia during the dead of winter thru ice?
I wanna go see grandma this weekend with a friend. Wanna take my volvo, but the mountains are treacherous and its a long drive. Think I can make it? Or maybe rent an SUV in NYC. Hmmm.

A: Take the Volvo, make sure traction and winter mode is on.

Q: How can I become a Volvo Trucks mechanic?
I currently work for a trucking company in part sales. I seem to have a good understanding of trucks and enjoy all aspects of them. Specifically Volvo Trucks. Does anyone know how and where I can learn to work on Volvo Trucks?

A: A graduate certificate in automotive technology and diesel technology from UTI, WyoTech or other similar reputable accredited technical institution will qualify you for an entry-level position and Volvo specific advanced training.

Q: What is the official website for Volvo buses? How can you register online for the bus tickets?
Can you please tell me the official website for "Volvo" buses? How can I register online for the bus tickets and/or know if they are available?

A: Bus tickets? You get those through your local transport department, not through the bus manufacturer.

Q: How can I find if its possible to substitute a volvo transmission?
I have a 1994 Volvo 850 and I was wondering how I find out if I can substitute a transmission from another volvo from a different year like1993 or 1995?

A: Sorry to tell you this but the short answer is probably NOT. Some of the 1994 is compatible with some 1995 models upwards. But depending on the engine type, transmissions may not even be compatible within the same year if the engine type was different. Read below for more. Although transmissions for the Volvo 850 remained the same from the year they were first introduced in 1993 up to 1995. 2 types AW50-42 (Automatic) M56 (Manual) There were many incompatible variants. To substitute transmission first check your transmission type, Auto or Manual. Then engine type and year. Manual Transmission Exchange units Trans # 5003924-7 for engine B5252FS B5204FT B5234FT Trans # 5003890-0 for engine B5254FS Trans # 5003891-8 for engine B5204FS Automatic Transmission (T=Turbo S=norm aspirated) Part # 1208776 for engine B5234S 1994 only engine B5254S 1994 to 1995 engine B5252S 1994 to 1995 Part # 1208560 engine B5234T 1994 to 1995 Part # 1208774 engine BB5204S 1994 to 1995 More on 850 transmission history here. In 1996 M59 transmission was introduced for the B5234T4 Engine (Volvo 850R) Volvo's quickest car ever and well sought after. In its final year, 1997. The B5254T (Volvo 850, 2.5 litre, 5 cyl turbo) used the M58 transmission for AWD. Please refer to link below. Person answering that question is a qualified Volvo mechanic. Also links below to identify engine type and transmission. Good luck!

Q: How do I get my 1983 Volvo to warm up faster?
I have to let my 1983 Volvo idle (for the first couple of minutes with my foot on the gas) for about 7-10 minutes before it will drive without stalling. After it gets past that point, it rides like a dream. What can I do to decrease the warm-up/idle time? Adjust the idle? Something with the throttle? Help! I just bought the car last week, but I think it's been at least a year since it had a tune-up. Would that help?

A: if it's not fuel injected you can adjust the choke , f.i. cars will have a temp. sensor to tell the injectors to run a rich mixture , when was the last time you had a major tune up ?

Q: How does a Volvo C30 T5 with automatic transmission against a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT?
I traded in my Eclipse for a new Volvo C30 T5, which I opted for Volvo’s safety. How does it compare in performance?

A: Depends on which Mitsubushi GS only has 162 hp and will be out run by Volvo but if your spider is a GT with a V-6 265 hp motor vs the volvo's 227 hp turbocharged 5 cly motor then Mitsubushi would out run the volvo glass back C-30 coupe. Based on straight line acceleration GS (loose) GT (win) Good Question I think either car could be about equal in a race on the road course track however.

Q: What do you think of my theory why Volvo drivers are said to be dangerous?
Where I live there's an old joke about how dangerous Volvo drivers are even though they are ment to be fantastically safe cars. Everyone here knows the joke. People who buy Volvos don't care what people think. Therefore a person driving a Volvo doesn't give a damn about others on the road. Therefore accidents. Cycle repeats.

A: I think your theory is sterotypical arrogant bullshit. I owned a Volvo 240 sedan at one time. Just because someone drives a Volvo does not mean they don't give a damn about others on the road. FYI...I bought the Volvo because I was a new driver and wanted a safe car. I had that car for 6 years. The only accident I was in was hit N run...a Honda Civic speeding on the feeder. He lost control and slammed into the back of my car. Noone in my car was injured and the car itself had no visible damage. Wanna talk about drivers who don't give a damn? Ok...how about all those SUV and pickup drivers out there using these things like weapons.

Q: How much do Volvo seat belts increase the stopping distance during a crash?
During a car crash, how much do seat belts increase the stopping distance by; preferably in Volvo's however, any type of car would be fine. Also, is there a difference between the stopping distance of a seat belt which is retracted and one which is not. Any equations would also be very helpful. And please include a website source.

A: Seat belts have nothing at all to do with stopping...brakes do however...

Q: Can I service a Volvo still under its warranty at somewhere other than the dealership?
If a Volvo is still under its warranty, could one service it or get its oil changed, etc, somewhere other than the dealership without voiding the warranty? Just wanted to know. Thanks!

A: First answer is completely incorrect in all cases. Yes, you can get the car serviced somewhere besides the dealer. You can even service it yourself. As long as either the independent shop, or you, do all the required maintenances, use the proper filters and fluids, and most importantly, KEEP RECORDS OF IT. The warranty cannot legally be voided if you do this, and the manufacturer cannot require you to take it to the dealership for service. It's a good idea to at least get SOME of the service done at the dealership, as the techs there will be much more familiar with your particular make of car than an independent shop that works on everything is. So they'll know all the typical things to keep an eye on once the car gets up there in mileage.

Q: How many Volvo owners with automatic transmission have had to replace the transmission on their car?
I've been told by two reliable mechanics that Volvos with automatic transmission are much more likely to need major repairs or replacement than the same make with manual transmission. I'm seriously considering a used 1999 Volvo S70 with over 65,000 miles. The car is being sold by the original owner who has all the maintenance records, and mechanically everything else checks out, including the 60,000 mile service (new brakes plus other things) and a clean Carfax report. I drove cars with manual transmssion for 15 years and strongly prefer an automatic.

A: Don't be fooled the Volvo trans is the same in the Toyota it's a t50 trans on the inside and vary reliable if you keep the maintenance up. On the drive shaft is a bushing witch is the leading cause of failure to the Volvo transmission. Easy fix If it wears out replace it

Q: What to do about a Volvo coolant indicator light?
My Volvo 850 coolant indicator light comes on occasionally. The heat gauge is up a little more than usual. The reservoir has some coolant in it. I noticed that there is no radiator cap. I also noticed the sticker says to only use Volvo coolant. Is that true? With fluid in the reservior why would the indicator light be coming on?

A: The reseviour is the overflow, the radiator may be low. Volvo probably uses one of the new coolants that does not mix with ethelene-glycol. Check with your dealer's parts department to make sure. My Audi used G12.

Q: How does one destroy the frame of a volvo ?
One of my co-workers totaled the frame of her volvo. I thought that was impossible because I thought the volvo frame was re-enforced. Isn't volvo suppose to be the safest car on the road?

A: It's pretty easy. In fact, that's the reason why Volvos are so safe. The frame is the main part of the crumple zone. As it is destroyed, it absorbs some of the force of the impact, so that you body doesn't have to.

Q: Where can I find a cheap and good quality shop for volvo maintenance?
I just bought a 2000 Volvo S40 for a car dealer. However, the transmission(auto) slips under the situation that I accelerate the car from 55 miles to 65. My friend told me it is the problem of transmission. Where can I find a reliable maintenance shop on deling with volvo cars in Dallas, Texas?

A: In the world of automotive good and cheep don't go together your better off looking for an honest and experienced German car mechanic . you need more then maintenance your trans is slipping most likely because the clutches are wore out and the trans needs to be overhauled or replaced by some that know what there doing and will give you a nation wide warranty if possible.

Q: How can somebody change the temperature display on a Volvo V70 to Celsius and the clock to 24 hour format?
This is a 2001 Volvo V70 purchased in the United States.

A: if i remember correctly you press in both hour and minute buttons and hold them in and it will switch between the two formats

Q: What is the best way to take off a 1990 Volvo 740 Door panel?
I have a detached speaker cone on the driver side and the door panel doesn't look like its sitting flush anyway. The passenger door panel pocket is busted and I have a replacement I want to use. 1990 Volvo 740 GL sedan, blue interior.

A: You need to remove the following, -Door Lock Knob -red light on the side of the panel -speaker grille -3 white clips at the bottom of the door panel -switch assembly and the trim that covers it. At that point the doorpanel should be loose and ready to be removed. Install is the reverse of removal, make sure the door panel that you have looks the same and has the same mounting as volvo changes the door panel from several years.
