Q: How to change a mazda miata clutch slave cylinder INSIDE the transmission?
So I have all the symptoms of a bad slave cylinder but it turns out the slave behind my wheel is just fine. I am being told there is another slave INSIDE the transmission - is this true? If so, that is beyond my ability to repair so I'd like to know how much to expect for a repair of this nature and I'd also like links or instructions on how the repair is done. PLEASE NOTE: The issue is NOT the slave cylinder behind my wheel, I have checked and this is completely fine.

A: ok some are bolted on the side of the motor, while other are in side the bell housing, if it the the one in side the bell, you need to pull thr tran

Q: Rear sway bars in the Mazda Miata?
What's a good replacement sway bar for the Mazda Miata? I've heard the stock ones are utter garbage. (91') Is that even true? I should note that this car will be performance driven.

A: I would take a crack at this, but there are things I don't know about your situation (cost, etc.). Take a look at http://www.miata.net/ and search for "sway bar." I think you'll find exactly what you need there.

Q: attention mazda miata owners, a question for you. At what mileage does the timing belt have to be changed?
I am thinking of purchasing a miata mx5 but want to avoid getting stuck with replacing a timimg belt as well with the purchase, If you know the price to do this, that would be appreciated too, maybe it is not all that much to worry about?

A: Change is every 60,000 mile or 100,000 kms I believe.

Q: Is it simple to replace a power steering line for a mazda miata?
i had a leak in mine and now the car squeals when i first start it up and when turning. i would like to try and replace myself, i am somewhat mechanically capable. Is it something I should try and do myself?

A: sure if you know which line it is and can see what it looks like you can get a new one first or take it off and then get a new one getting to them is most offen the hard part... and might have to have a line wrench to get it to break free is better any ways but sometimes a open end wrench wil do it.. its do able go for it.. rememebr to get fluid while your at the store.. and you might have to bleed it by turnning the wheel al lthe way and abck a few times to get any air out of the system but ... it is not that hard of a thing to do like i said getting to it is the hard part

Q: would it be for a 17 year old guy to drive a mazda miata?
do u think its for a 17 year old guy to drive a black or red mazda miata ?

A: I would steer clear of a red color car of any variety. They tend to get pulled over more and register higher on a speed gun. I also would not just settle on black either. You need to determine what version of the Miata your interested in and then look at the colors available for that set of years. The first generation ones looked very sharp in Silver, Black, Green, and Mariner Blue...colors for other versions have come and gone, including purple. So determine what version of the Miata you want and then see what color you prefer for that version.

Q: What type of clutch is in a 1994 Mazda Miata?
All of a sudden, it is extremely difficult to shift into different gears, not having much knowledge on the mechanical workings of a car, I am wondering whether there are cables that can be adjusted, and is the clutch hydraulic?

A: its probably time to replace the clutch. take it to a shop and see what they say seance you don't know much about cars.

Q: Where is the fuse for the rear window defroster in a '99 mazda miata?
Mine doesn't work so I need to check the fuse but i don't know where it is. A detailed description on how to get to it would be helpful.

A: Have you looked in the owner's manual? If you do not have one, the dealer service department can show you where the fuse block is located.

Q: How do I make my Mazda Miata shine like it used to?
Washing it doesn't seem to give it that new shine that it used to have. I even tried waxing it and still, it's not as shiny as it once was. I'm thinking about getting it detailed, but if it's something I can do myself, i'd rather not pay somebody else to do it. What the?! I picked automotive! What the hell. Oh well, come on computer people, help me out! I'm sure you guys wax up your PC cases.

A: What a strange question to put in Computer Networking. =) When you say "even tried waxing" it makes me think that the paint has never been properly cared for. It's important to wax regularly, from the beginning, to keep the finish at its best. That said, there are things you can do on your own, and there are things you can't. Detailing is just a fancy word for waxing. The products they use *might* be a better grade than what you buy at Target, but sometimes are not. They might know more about it than you, and they might not. If you're going to take it on yourself, the one thing that makes a big difference is using a motorized polisher and a good cleaner like Meguiar's or Mother's. That's how you get a significant amount of oxidation off evenly. So often, the trouble with hand polishing is that you don't get a very even application (of product, or of power) and you end up with splotches. Or your oxidation on the paint is too heavy to remove easily by hand. Using an electric buffer can be a big help in this case. Please don't use the kind that just spins around like a saw blade. The best ones are random orbitals that move back and forth as they go around the circle so you don't get giant swirl marks. http://www.autogeek.net/dual-action-polisher.html http://www.autogeek.net/bupo.html Also you'll want to use a finishing pad that looks basically like a big sponge. In this way, you can go around the curves of the surface without grinding out. Also keeps the abrasion to a minimum (just what's in your polish). http://www.autogeek.net/foam-polishing-pads.html Using the appropriate liquid product (designed for machine polishing) is also key. If you use a hand wax with an orbital, you're almost certain to hurt the car. http://www.autogeek.net/carwax.html NOTE: Polishing is a lot like sanding, just at a smaller detail level. If you're not comfortable with power tools, you can do more harm than good using power tools on your car! So in this case, you might be ahead to pay $100 for a decent exterior detail. Ask specific questions about what will be done, what products will be used, and how oxidized they believe the paint looks. Ask how much you can expect the overall look of the car to change after the treatment. If your paint has been out in the sun for a lot of years, it might never return to its previous luster. Use a shop, not a car wash. Make sure an adult who knows paint is doing the work (not a kid at the car wash). Make sure the price is for exterior work. I went somewhere and purchased detail once without asking any questions, and they did the interior completely (dusting, vacuum, armor-all) and nothing to the body. D'oh. You could have it clearcoated somewhere. They can just hit the whole thing with a fresh layer of clear and it will really glow. =) Good luck.

Q: How to ajust a clutch on a 1990 Mazda Miata?
I gave my miata to my father 6 years ago, the clutch needs adjusting, anybody know how>? can it be done through the pedal? thanks in advance! Lorin

A: The clutch is self adjusting. It it will not disengage the clutch then the system is leaking. Which is either in the master and/or the slave. It could also be a failed line (there is a hose in the system that fails). So bleed the system and pump it up, that is all the adjustment there is! If the clutch will not engage suspect that the clutch is gone. I just went ahead and replaced the complete set up with a ten pound flywheel off e-bay on one of my 90 Miata's last year for less then a stock set up. Owner of 90 Miata's for over ten years.

Q: I recently got a ticket for not displaying a front license plate on my 91 Mazda Miata. How do I mount a plate?
I don't see how I would mount the plate onto the front unless there was some wleding involved...any suggestions?

A: http://www.teammiata.com/mall/TM305.htm Buy the above part and mount your plate!

Q: Can the clutch on a 1999 Mazda Miata be adjusted?
I've notice receintly that the clutch on my car needs to be depressed all the way to the floor before it engages. It hasn't alway been like this. It use to engage before reaching the floor. It works fine otherwise. Is this something that can be adjusted? If so, is it something that can be done by an amateur?

A: It is probably the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder. Check the fluid level in your clutch master cylinder, it is probably low. One or the other is probably either leaking, or the fluid is going past the seals back into the reservoir.

Q: Do you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?
I just want to know if this is a good functioning car. Is it good in gas mileage? Does it have any main issues that I should look out for? Things like that. It's going to be my first car and I want a car that is a 2 seater and is stick and that is cheap to take care of. So is this a good car for that?

A: Mazda Miatas are great cars and I've owned several. They are very hearty and have been known to last over 250,000 with proper maintenance. The engine the miata uses take forced induction very well. They are popular on many track circuits as well. Here is the breakdown. First Generation: (by far the easiest to modify) 90-93: 1.6l engine 94-95: 1.8l engine, Mazda beefed up the engine so expect to get about 10-15 more horsepower out of these cars. They were still OBDI and didn't fall under the same emissions controls. 96-97: Mazda again beefed up the engine but not by much. The car has OBDII and some extra components for the new emissions controls. Second Generation: 99-00: Mazda completely changed the body and did away with the pop-up headlights. Still uses a 1.8l engine but ran about 10 more horsepower than the first generation. 01-05 Mazda beefed up the cars look and made the 1.8l more powerful but not by much. Also Mazda introduced 01-05 Mazdaspeed models which included a turbocharger. Third Generation 06-09: Mazda introduced a brand new 2.0l engine and produced about 20 more horsepower than the second generation miata. Although they are faster, many complain that it doesn't handle as well as the first generation.

Q: Do you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?
The brother thinks there are no sports cars under $50,000. I said "How about the older miata, it was in the top sports cars of the decade in the 90's." He said "Nope, a miata isn't a sports car." Dave you just proved everyone's opinions wrong with even more opinions... (Yes d david 28 is my brother)

A: Lots of cars are "sporty" cars, but the Miata is truly a sports car. The handling is superior to many $50,000+ cars out there. Regarding the height "issue," a 6'4" basketball player at my college owned a Miata and he said he had no problems getting in and out. And there is a ton of legroom inside. The Miata isn't just sporty, it's a true sports car. Drive a Miata. Take it on a mountain road. Test the handling. Then tell me it isn't a sports car. Your comments regarding performance lead me to believe that you've never driven one.

Q: How much would a good paint job for my mazda miata cost?
Where should I take it, any suggestions.

A: I have a 19 year old Miata and I really needed to get the metal protected. I took it to Maaco and it cost about $530 or so. Was it "good"? It's GREAT compared to what I had on there - oxidized red/pink "paint" that was almost to metal. Am I satisfied? Yes. It's fine for what I needed it for. Will it last? I hope so. I had clear-coat put on and I'm trying to keep it waxed.
